Experience Africa, one step at a time
Step into the unspoiled, sun-drenched wilderness of Northern KwaZulu-Natal, walking the ancient pathways carved by elephant over generations. This is a return to something real — where you feel close to the earth again, immersed in the raw adventure and spirit of true Africa.
Ancient Wilderness • Big Game • Tailored Comfort
Follow ancient game paths through the timeless wilderness of Northern KwaZulu-Natal, where every step draws you deeper into a landscape shaped by wildlife, silence, and age-old movement. The Pangolin Trail is designed as a flexible walking safari that offers the authenticity of a true wilderness experience, while allowing guests to choose the level of comfort that suits them best.
Each day is spent on foot with an experienced trails guide, moving slowly and intentionally through wild country rich in spoor, birdlife, and the possibility of meaningful encounters with big game. Rhino, elephant, buffalo, and other species are all part of the wider landscape, and the experience is as much about learning to read the bush as it is about simply being in it.
This trail is ideal for guests who want to feel the thrill of a mobile safari while still having options in how they rest at the end of the day. Whether you choose to sleep beneath the stars, return to a private self-catering base, or relax in a more refined lodge setting, the heart of the experience remains the same: to walk slowly, reconnect deeply, and experience the bush in its raw and most honest form.
Sleep out beneath the stars in a lightweight, mobile camp setup. This is the most authentic expression of the trail — simple, wild, and deeply connected to the rhythms of nature.
Enjoy the wilderness by day and return to a comfortable bush base in the evenings. This option offers independence and simplicity, while still keeping you close to the landscape.
High-end accommodation with air-conditioned rooms and all-inclusive, chef-prepared dinners — an ideal blend of adventure and ease.
Best For
Guests looking for an authentic walking safari that can be tailored from rugged and adventurous to comfortable and refined.

Coastline • Tides • Living Ocean
The Turtle Trail is a rare coastal walking experience that brings together wild shoreline, marine adventure, and the untamed natural beauty of Northern KwaZulu-Natal. This trail explores remote beaches, dune forests, estuarine systems, and the shifting edge where land meets sea.
Days are spent walking along empty stretches of coastline, discovering the signs of life left in the sand, listening to the rhythm of the surf, and immersing yourself in a slower, more elemental world. This experience offers a different kind of wilderness — one shaped by tide, wind, ocean currents, and the quiet wonder of the coast.
Depending on the season, guests may have the extraordinary opportunity to witness turtles coming ashore to nest, or hatchlings making their first journey to the sea. Snorkelling and diving can also be added to the experience, opening up another world below the surface.
Best For
Couples, families, photographers, ocean lovers, and anyone seeking a softer but deeply immersive wilderness experience.
Silence • Simplicity • Return to Self
The Ubombo Wilderness Trail is a true primitive wilderness immersion — a 3 to 6 day journey for those who want to step away from noise, routine, and distraction, and return to something more essential. Set within the ancient and rugged landscapes of the Ubombo region, this trail is less about comfort and more about presence.
Guests move through remote wilderness on foot, carrying only what is needed and living simply in rhythm with the land. Nights are spent fly-camping in wild places, with no unnecessary barriers between you and the natural world. Over time, the pace slows, the senses sharpen, and a deeper awareness begins to emerge.
This trail is not designed as a luxury safari, but as an experience of wilderness submersion — one that strips life back to its basics and allows space for stillness, reflection, and inner reset. It is about disconnecting from the modern world in order to reconnect with yourself, the land, and the quiet intelligence of the bush.
Best For
Those seeking a deeper wilderness experience, a break from modern life, and the chance to reconnect with themselves through simplicity and solitude.

Short Walks • Big Encounters • Accessible Wilderness
Not every wilderness experience needs to take place over several days. The Morning Walk Experience offers guided morning and afternoon bush walks of 3–4 hours in both Mkuze Game Reserve and Manyoni Private Game Reserve, making it the ideal option for guests who want a meaningful encounter with the bush in a shorter timeframe.
These walks are designed to reveal the details so often missed from a vehicle. On foot, the bush opens up in a different way — tracks become stories, bird calls become signposts, and every change in wind or movement has meaning. Guests are guided through the landscape by experienced trails guides who interpret animal behaviour, ecology, birdlife, and the smaller wonders of the natural world.
This is a wonderful introduction to walking safaris and also a strong option for guests who may not have time for a multi-day trail, but still want to feel the magic of moving through wild places on foot.
Best For
Guests with limited time, first-time walkers, photographers, families, and anyone wanting a deeper connection to the bush in just a few hours.
Four journeys. One philosophy. To slow down, walk with intention, and experience the wild as it truly is.
Professional Development
Zululand Explorers also offers professional Trails Guide Training for those looking to become FGASA-qualified trails guides. Led by FP Aucamp (Wilderness and Trails mentor), an experienced full trails guide with extensive time in big game country, the training focuses on developing both the technical skills and mindset required to safely and confidently operate on foot in dangerous game areas.
Students are guided through practical, hands-on learning in real wilderness conditions — covering tracking, animal behaviour, approach techniques, rifle handling, and situational awareness — while building the confidence and presence essential to becoming a competent and respected trails guide.
